TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY July 8
1775 - The mother of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Lucy Mack, was born on this day in Gilsum, New Hampshire.
1828 - About this time, the Prophet Joseph records that he was walking in the forest near his home in Harmony, Pennsylvania, when "the former heavenly messenger appeared and handed to me the Urim and Thummin again-for it had been taken from me in consequence of my having wearied the Lord in asking for the privilege of letting Martin Harris take the writings, which he lost by transgression-and I inquired of the Lord through it, and obtained the following." The revelation is recorded as Doctrine and Covenants 3 calling Joseph to repentance and warning him to fear God more than man. (History of the Church, 1:21-23).
1838 - The Prophet Joseph Smith receives four revelations on this day: Doctrine and Covenants 117, 118, 119, and 120. These revelations deal with calling new members of the Twelve Apostles and calling them to serve a mission to Great Britain, instructions of the law of tithing, and other subjects.
1839 - Over the course of the next three days, the Prophet Joseph records he spent time "with the Twelve selecting hymns, for the purpose of compiling a hymn book" (History of the Church, 4:3).
1847 - The pioneer company spent the day making repairs and resting near Fort Bridger in preparation for the final leg of their journey to the valley of the Great Salt Lake.
1856 - The Saints that later make up the Martin Handcart company arrive at Iowa City, Iowa, to outfit themselves for their journey west to Utah.
1912 - Church member Alma Richards, representing the United States, wins a gold medal in the high jump at the Olympic Games held in Sweden. He is the first Latter-day Saint to win an Olympic medal.
1916 - The Tongan Mission is organized.
1956 - First branch of the Church is organized in Peru.
1962 - The Irish and Korean Missions are organized.
1981 - The first Latter-day Saint Church service is held in the South American country of French Guiana.
2000 - The Merida Yucatan Mexico Temple is dedicated by President Thomas S. Monson.
2005 - A new musical pageant premiered in Nauvoo, Illinois, that tells the story of the Prophet Joseph Smith and Mormon Nauvoo from 1839-1846.
