TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY July 15
1842 - Two meetings were held, one in the morning where the Prophet Joseph spoke, and one in the afternoon where Hyrum Smith and Heber C. Kimball spoke, to inform the citizens of Nauvoo "of John C. Bennett's conduct." The former member of the Church and Mayor of Nauvoo had become a bitter anti-Mormon after his improper personal life became public knowledge. (History of the Church, 5:60-61).
1843 - The Prophet Joseph spent most of the day at home with his family. At six p.m. he went with his family "and about 100 others on a pleasure excursion on the Maid of Iowa, from the Nauvoo House landing to the north part of the city, and returned at dusk" (History of the Church, 5:510).
1847 - Wilford Woodruff brought his carriage back for a sick Brigham Young to ride in as it was an easier ride than a wagon. This small group caught up to the main body of pioneers and continued traveling down Echo Canyon and camped at the foot of some high red bluffs near a good stream of water. The forward group, under the direction of Orson Pratt, also continued down the canyon and camped near present day Henefer, Utah. Several brethren searched for the Reed-Donner trail and found it although it was nearly obliterated.
1856 - The fourth handcart company, led by returning missionary James G. Willie, leaves Iowa City, Iowa, for the Salt Lake Valley. It contained 500 people, 120 handcarts, and 6 wagons. Most had crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the ship Thornton which had left late from Liverpool, England. The wagon makers in Iowa City, having already supplied three companies, rushed to complete enough handcarts to supply the large number of members wanting to go to Zion this season. These delays resulted in a late start for the difficult journey and the many deaths of the Willie Company with their final arrival in Salt Lake City on November 9.
1891 - The first missionaries, Brigham Smoot and Alva J. Butler, arrive in the island nation of Tonga.
1929 - Using a borrowed microphone, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's first broadcast of what would later become known as Music and the Spoken Word, took place over the NBC radio network. Ted Kimball was the announcer, Anthon Lund the conductor, and Edward P. Kimball the organist. Later the weekly broadcast switched to KSL radio on the CBS network.
1968 - The first missionaries arrive in the South Pacific island nation of New Caledonia.
1973 - The Port Vila Branch is organized, the first branch in the island nation of Vanuatu.
1987 - The Genealogical Library celebrates the completion of transferring the card catalog to a computerized system.
1999 - The American Society of Landscape Architects honored the Church with a "once-in-a-century" medallion award for its landscaping at Church headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah. There are 165,000 flowers of 460 different varieties used to landscape the Church headquarters complex.
