TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY August 4 1831 - A conference of the Church was held at the home of Joshua Lewis in Kaw Township, Jackson County, Missouri, as called for in Doctrine and Covenants 52. 1839 - The Prophet Joseph spoke to the Saints in Commerce, later Nauvoo, and encouraged them "concerning the necessity of being righteous, and clean at heart before the Lord." Members of the Twelve also spoke to the congregation. (History of the Church, 4:5) 1842 - The Prophet Joseph records, "In company with fifteen others learning sword exercise with Colonel Brewer, and attending to a variety of business" (History of the Church, 5:84). 1899 - Ezra Taft Benson, thirteenth President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is born in Whitney, Idaho. 1902 - The Bureau of Information and Church Literature opens on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is the forerunner of the visitor's centers on Temple Square today. 1940 - Bonnie Rae Dansie Parkin, fourteenth General President of the Relief Society from 2002-2007, was born in Murray, Utah. 1991 - The renovated and landscaped Smith Family Cemetery in Nauvoo, Illinois, is dedicated. The dedication is performed under the joint direction of President Wallace Smith, President of the RLDS (now Community of Christ) Church, and Elder M. Russell Ballard of the LDS Church. The cemetery contains the grave sites of Joseph, Emma, Joseph's brothers, Don Carlos, Samuel, and Hyrum, Joseph, Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith, and many other family members. 1997 - Time magazine publishes an article dealing with the progress and wealth of the Church entitled "Kingdom Come." |
