TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY April 23 . 1834 - The Prophet Joseph Smith receives the revelation known as Doctrine and Covenants 104, which explains the United Order for the benefit of the poor. 1839 - The Prophet Joseph, having arrived the day previous in Quincy, Illinois, from imprisonment in Missouri, records, "All this day I spent in greeting and receiving visits from my brethren and friends, and truly it was a joyful time" (History of the Church, 3:334). 1861 - The first of several Church wagon trains leaves the Salt Lake Valley with provisions for Saints at the Missouri River who needed the help of wagons and provisions to immigrate to Utah. This program to help new immigrants lasts until the railroad comes to Utah in 1869. 1912 - Joseph F. Merrill, a member of the Granite Stake presidency, announces that the first seminary program will be established during the coming academic year at Granite High School in Salt Lake City, Utah. 1993 - Albania is dedicated for missionary work by Elder Dallin H. Oaks. 2000 - The Reno Nevada Temple is dedicated by President Thomas S. Monson of the First Presidency. Also, the Memphis Tennessee Temple is dedicated by President James E. Faust of the First Presidency. In England, Elder Jeffery R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, rededicates the rebuilt Gadfield Elm Chapel, the oldest LDS chapel in England. It was constructed in 1836 by the United Brethren and given to the Church four years later when 600 members of that faith joined the Church en masse. |
