TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY April 19
1775 - Battle of Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts places the American Colonies on the path that leads to the Revolutionary War for American Independence. During the previous night, Paul Revere made his famous ride to warn the colonists the Red Coats were coming. The first shots were fired on the Lexington Village Green just after dawn and became known as the "shot heard round the world." An independent American nation provided a fertile ground for restoration of the gospel and the birth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1830.
1834 - The Prophet Joseph Smith, along with Sidney Rigdon, Oliver Cowdery, and Zebedee Coltrin, continued the journey to New Portage, Ohio. On this day they arrived in Norton and stayed in the home of Jonathan Taylor. After their arrival, the four men went into the near by woods "where we united in prayer and supplication for the blessings of the Lord to be given unto His Church." They gave one another priesthood blessings of wisdom and knowledge in the performance of their individual duties in the Church. (History of the Church, 2:50-51)
1843 - The Prophet Joseph attended Court in Nauvoo in an appeal of his decision in the Dana vs. Dr. Brink case of March 10th. The court decided in the Mayor's favor. Later in the day the Prophet met with the Quorum of the Twelve on Church matters. He also chose a site for a music hall to be built in Nauvoo. (History of the Church, 5:365-368)
1847 - William Clayton suggested to Orson Pratt the idea of a set of wooden cogs connected to the hub of a wagon that could measure the distance traveled each day. He had tied a red rag to a wheel and was growing weary of counting the revolutions to determine how far they had traveled. He had to wait until May 12th before the "roadometer" was completed and hooked up to a wagon to be released of his daily counting duty.
1915 - Elder James E. Talmage finishes writing the book Jesus the Christ.
1938 - A group of LDS missionaries, including future Apostle Marvin J. Ashton, win the Great Britain National Basketball Championship.
1991 - The Church is officially recognized in Ivory Coast, Africa.
1997 - In a re-enactment of the epic journey of the 1847 pioneers, a wagon train departs Council Bluffs, Iowa, on its way to Salt Lake City, Utah, for the sesquicentennial celebration.
2005 - The First Presidency announced the creation of the Seventh and Eighth Quorums of Seventy.
2013 - Since 2006, when the program started, FamilySearch volunteers have indexed one billion records. The one billionth record was indexed and arbitrated at 12:40 p.m., and the volunteers who handled that record were identified as Kenneth B. of California, Brittney S. of Idaho, and April R. of Alberta, Canada.
