This session is one of a number of sessions which are part of the One Stop Business Workshop series – free virtual information sessions that introduce emerging independent producers and content creators from traditionally underrepresented groups to topics related to business and financing for TV, film and original digital content. Sessions run from June 15 to 25.

Women in View (WIV) released their sixth On Screen Report documenting women’s employment in Canada’s publicly funded screen-based media from 2018 to 2019.
The findings showed that Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) women remain significantly under-employed on Canada’s film and television productions. Of the 43% of women in key creative TV roles in 2019, only 6.44% were Black or People of Colour and only 0.94% were Indigenous women.
Investment in women-led projects remains lower than in men, particularly when it comes to directors. It is lower still when producers and directors are BIPOC women.
WIV states that in order to impact diversity, commitments need to be made that specifically address the hiring of BIPOC creatives and prioritizing productions run by BIPOC women – ultimately achieving equity for all women.
WIV is a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening gender representation and diversity in Canadian media both on screen and behind the scenes. NSI alumna Tracey Deer (NSI Storytellers, Featuring Aboriginal Stories Program) is the current chair of the board.
CISF is a production fund for Black and racially diverse communities led by key creators in the BPOC film community. Jennifer Holness (NSI Drama Prize, Telefilm – Canada Spark Plug Program, NSI Global Marketing), Adeline Bird (CBC New Indigenous Voices), Samantha Kaine (NSI associate faculty), Lalita Krishna (NSI Global Marketing) and Joy Loewen (NSI CEO) are a few of the current sitting board members.
CISF analyzed the recent Canada Media Fund (CMF)-IPSOS report reflecting the data collected as part of the Black and People of Colour COVID-19 Relief Allocation Funding. The report revealed the extent of the difficulties BPOC communities experience producing media content.
“The CMF-IPSOS report highlights the major disparities in income for BPOC creators, identifying that 73% are self-financing their projects and many are earning less than $30K per year,” said Jennifer Holness in the CISF press release.

Lisa Meeches (NSI Storytellers, NSI Indigenous Training Programs Advisor) has joined the board of directors at the Banff Television Festival Foundation.
BANFF Word Media Festival announced earlier this week that Lisa – along with BRON Media’s co-founder and president Brenda Gilbert and HBO Max’s SVP of international originals Jennifer Kim – would join the board of directors ahead of the 2021 festival.
Lisa is the founder and executive producer of Eagle Vision. She was also recently named to the Order of Canada for her contributions to Canadian film and broadcasting.
Corner Gas Animated, executive produced by Virginia Thompson and Robert de Lint (both NSI Features First) of Vérité Films, has announced that their fourth and final season will premiere on July 5.
Corner Gas has been a Canadian favourite since 2004, with six seasons of the live action show, a movie and now four seasons of the animated version.
This final season will feature guest stars including musician Steven Page, and actors Tantoo Cardinal, Kim Coates, Simu Liu, Mark McKinney and Rick Mercer.
