2018 NSI IndigiDocs training course kicks off in Winnipeg

The National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) is pleased to announce the 2018 launch of NSI IndigiDocs, a training course for producer/director teams looking to produce a short documentary.

Training boot camp kicks off on Monday, February 5 with a pipe ceremony led by Elder Colin Mousseau, and a traditional feast to bless the students on their journey.

This year’s projects and students are:

“NSI IndigiDocs boot camp is a great opportunity for these students to improve their documentary storytelling skills and connect with industry pros,” said Elise Swerhone, NSI IndigiDocs program co-manager. “Training is always a time of huge growth, and this year’s faculty is excellent as always – I’m excited to see the short documentaries that will result from the program.”

During the two-week boot camp students will attend sessions with over 20 different industry professionals including legendary documentary filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin.

Lisa Jackson and Shane Belcourt are the program’s director advisors and Ursula Lawson and Elise Swerhone are the program co-managers. Lisa Meeches is the NSI Indigenous Training Programs Advisor.

NSI IndigiDocs provides Indigenous director/producer teams with training, mentorship and cash towards the production of a short documentary. Post-production on their films is completed at the National Film Board in Montreal. Students also travel to Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto and have their short films broadcast nationally on APTN and streamed on aptn.ca and nfb.ca.

Films developed through the program have had success around the world. Most recently Cree Code Talker, from Alexandra Lazarowich and Cowboy Smithx, won the Gil Cardinal Documentary Award at Dreamspeakers Film Festival in Edmonton. And From Up North, from Trudy Stewart and Janine Windolph, won the International Indigenous Award at the 2017 Wairoa Maori Film Festival in New Zealand.
