JJ Neepin talks about Indigenous traditions and her film Headdress in CBC roundtable

CBC recently held a roundtable conversation with JJ – Jenna – Neepin (NSI IndigiDocs) and three Indigenous artists: Angela Semple, Louis Esmé and Shaheen Baker.

Their conversation covered, among other things, the symbolism of the headdress, navigating ceremonial skirt protocols as a non-binary person and connection to ancestors through ceremony.

As part of the conversation, JJ reflects on her grandparents’ lives: “Interesting thought: why do I feel like a ‘traditional’ photo is more Indigenous than, say, a photo of my other grandpa working on a railway? Or rather, I used to feel this way when I was younger. Nowadays I feel proud of my grandparents’ lives. But there was a time I didn’t feel Indigenous enough.”

JJ’s film Headdress recently premiered on CBC Short Docs.

Amanda Smart working as assistant director on new series I Knew My Murderer

Amanda Smart (CBC New Indigenous Voices) is currently working as an assistant director and associate producer on new series I Knew My Murderer in conjunction with Frantic Films.

Her work includes research on the true stories, scouting cast members, locations, props, wardrobe, picture vehicular and any special requirements.

LA production company Bellum Entertainment is head producer on the series.

I Knew My Murderer tells the chilling stories of killers who know their victims all too well. Behavioural experts give insight into the personalities of the killers and their victims as homicide detectives piece together the clues to the crime.
