Alumni news in brief, May 2020: Feature documentary from Jennifer Holness gets Telefilm backing Posted: 04 May 2020 03:29 PM PDT Starting today we’re introducing a brief monthly news roundup featuring updates from some of our past participants. If you’re a former NSI program participant with news to share about your latest project, get in touch and we’ll get the word out on our website in alumni news, and on social media. Feature documentary from Jennifer Holness gets Telefilm backingTelefilm recently announced the 15 English and French-language documentary feature films supported by the Theatrical Documentary Program, with funding totalling $2.1 million. Among the successful projects is Subjects of Desire by writer/director Jennifer Holness (NSI Drama Prize, Telefilm – Canada Spark Plug Program, NSI Global Marketing) – a film examining the cultural shift in North American beauty standards towards embracing (or as some feel – appropriating) Black aesthetics and features. Amelia Wasserman’s Adult 1.0 makes 2020 BlueCat Screenplay Competition semi-finalThe comedy feature film script from Amelia (NSI Features First) is one of 114 semi-finalists chosen from a total of 3,552 submissions. See the full list of semi-finalists. Finalists will be announced on May 12, 2020. Jeff Eyamie’s short So, What Do You Think? wins at Best Shorts CompetitionSo, What Do You Think?, a short film by writer/director Jeff Eyamie (NSI Totally Television), recently picked up an award of merit for Best Tube Length Video at the Best Shorts Competition in California. The film was also voted a Best International Micro Film Award Finalist at Austin Comedy Short Film Festival in March. Melva McLean (NSI Drama Prize) was script supervisor and Cody Blacksmith (CBC New Indigenous Voices) was sound mixer/boom operator.
