Congrats to Cowboy Smithx (NSI IndigiDocs) who is an Indspire Award winner in the arts category for his contribution as a filmmaker, director and supporter of Indigenous youth in the arts.

Award-winning producer, director and actor Cowboy Smithx is a nationally-recognized advocate for Indigenous arts and culture, bringing Indigenous artistic voices – particularly those of Indigenous youth – to the forefront. He is the founder and curator of REDx Talks, an acclaimed not-for-profit speaker series focusing on Indigenous issues in Canada and around the world.

The Indspire Awards represents the highest honour the Indigenous community bestows upon its own people. After 26 years, the Indspire Awards have honoured 362 First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals who demonstrate outstanding achievement.

The 2020 Indspire Awards ceremony takes place at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on March 6.

Promoting inclusion in the documentary space, the CrossCurrents Doc Funds foster storytelling from within groups whose perspectives have been historically underrepresented. The filmmaker’s deep connections to the community will offer a unique perspective on the stories they share. The Canadian funding stream, supported by Netflix, is for emerging and sophomore Canadian storytellers who are Indigenous, Francophone, deaf and/or have a disability, racialized or persons of colour.
