NSI’s Ursula Lawson nominated for Winnipeg Arts Council Making a Difference Award

The National Screen Institute is proud to announce we’ve nominated longtime NSI program manager Ursula Lawson for the 2019 Winnipeg Arts Council Making a Difference Award.

Through her work as manager of CBC New Indigenous Voices and NSI IndigiDocs, Ursula has made a difference in the lives and careers of over 150 filmmakers and storytellers.

In the words of her nomination letter, she offers humour, compassion, tough love, wisdom, advice, hugs, a place to live, a place to shoot films and a hot lunch. The care she brings to the programs isn’t found in conventional training courses and, while she would never call her methods strategic, they are empathetic to each student’s home life, story and family commitments. Ursula does her best to help each student find success.

The awards happen during the Mayor’s Luncheon for the Arts, held June 14, 2019 at Winnipeg’s Hotel Fort Garry.

Tasha Hubbard’s doc nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up screening in Winnipeg, June 5

Last week we wrote about Winnipeg’s second annual Indigenous Film Summit being held next month.

It’s just been announced that this year’s Indigenous Film Summit delegates get an exclusive opportunity to screen nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up from writer/director Tasha Hubbard (NSI IndigiDocs).

nîpawistamâsowin had its world premiere at Hot Docs, where it won Best Canadian Feature Documentary. The film is a personal reflection on the death of Colten Boushie, a young Cree man, and the subsequent trial and acquittal of the man who shot him.

This special preview is for Indigenous Film Summit delegates only at the Winnipeg Film Group’s Cinematheque on June 5. A public screening of the film at Cinematheque happens in July.

Register to attend the Indigenous Film Summit on June 4 and 5, 2019. Registration is $100 or $150 for both days. A discounted rate for students is available.
