Rehearsal

Posted: 07 May 2019 02:29 PM PDT

When a man discovers he has a terminal illness he devises a plan to help his wife get used to the idea of his impending demise.

Writer/director: Linda Rumney

Filmmaker’s statement

I’ve often wondered about the loss experienced by a person faced with a terminal diagnosis. We often talk about those ‘left behind’ following the death of a loved one but I wanted to view this experience from the dying person’s point of view.

What are they ‘giving up’? What are their fears for the people they are leaving behind? While Rehearsal is a comical view of death and dying, I’m hoping it does spark some serious conversations.

IF The Poet

Posted: 07 May 2019 02:24 PM PDT

IF The Poet is the moving, irreverent and inspiring story of IF (aka Ian French), a middle-aged man with a family, mortgage and career, who suddenly decides to crash the world of competitive slam poetry.

Creative team

Director/producer: Kim Saltarski

Filmmaker’s statement

I instantly knew after the first time I experienced IF performing his powerful personal truth at a sold-out poetry slam in Toronto that his story must be told beyond the spoken word stage. Thus began my over year-long odyssey chronicling IF’s triumphs and frustrations finding his place in the exploding Canadian spoken word scene.

But what I didn’t know was that being a fly on the wall in IF’s wondrous world would result in me personally growing as much as IF did on his own journey.

Our resulting documentary film, IF The Poet, is one of my proudest achievements as a storyteller. IF’s inspiring message of “no fear, only love” is truly a beacon for us all to embrace.

In the Blink of an Eye

Posted: 07 May 2019 02:15 PM PDT

A short documentary film about an extreme Whistler athlete, Don Schwartz, who discovers – 25 years after a tragic helicopter crash that leaves him with third-degree burns to his face – that he suffers from PTSD.

It’s not uncommon for extreme mountain athletes to experience tragedy and the loss of fellow adventurers, but what’s less common is the ability to truly face the deep scars left inside. This story uncovers how Don’s psychological issues are revealed unexpectedly through an unconventional piano session and follows his treatment and recovery journey right up until he decides the final test of his recovery is to take full control of his destiny by earning his helicopter pilot’s license.

Director: Janalee Budge
Producer: InFocus Film School

Filmmaker’s statement

Living in Whistler for 25 years, I have watched so many friends lose loved ones or become physical and/or mentally scarred themselves from extreme adventure accidents. Over and over again I hear that he or she died doing what they loved, and this is the mantra that is shared and almost expected to come from the mouths of everyone in town.

I can only imagine the torment that really goes on underneath for those who are left with physical and mental scars. I wanted to share one story that hopefully will inspire others who suffer from PTSD to reach out.
