Fire Song novel from Adam Garnet Jones nominated for CODE Burt Award Posted: 20 Sep 2018 02:03 PM PDT Fire Song, a novel by Adam Garnet Jones (Featuring Aboriginal Stories Program, NSI Storytellers, NSI Diverse TV Director) based on his feature film of the same name, has been nominated for a 2018 CODE Burt Award for First Nations, Inuit and Métis young adult literature. It’s one of three shortlisted nominees. The winner receives a $10K prize and each of the honour books receives $2K. Publishers of the winning titles are also awarded a guaranteed purchase of up to 2,500 copies of each title. These books are then distributed for free to schools, libraries, community centres and friendships centres across Canada. The award event takes place in partnership with the Kitigan Zibi School in the community of Kitigan Zibi, Quebec in November. Fire Song follows the turmoil of Shane, a gay Anishnaabe teenager struggling to support his family in the aftermath of his sister’s suicide. Determined to take care of his mother, he is torn between his responsibilities at home and the promise calling to him from the city. The film Fire Song was accepted to the Telefilm Canada Talent to Watch program in 2014 after being nominated by NSI.
