Meeting Mommy from Tricia Lee makes NBCUniversal’s short film fest semifinals

Meeting Mommy from director Tricia Lee (NSI Diverse TV Director) has made the semifinals of the 2018 NBCUniversal Short Film Festival.

Fifteen semifinalists were chosen from over 3,400 submissions. Eleven out of the 15 are written and/or directed by women.

The semifinalists are showcased at public screenings in New York on August 14 and 15. Finalists will be chosen by a panel of entertainment industry professionals and NBCUniversal executives. Winners will be selected for best writer, best director and best actor, among others.

The finale screening and awards ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on October 24.

In Meeting Mommy, Zoe has never questioned her mother’s absence from her life. However, on her sixth birthday, Zoe begins to wonder why she can only see mommy once every year.

Filmmaker’s statement

I am so thrilled to be sharing my first short documentary film Not a Stranger with the world. It is a film that I hope will inspire us to be a little kinder to one another and perhaps break down the barriers we put up around ourselves. That’s the film I set out to make but, often with documentaries, your story can shift or events take place that refocus your story.

I was given a gift because of Colin’s honesty and willingness to tell his story and journey with depression. Now, I believe the film accomplishes what it set out to do, but it will also continue the conversation around mental illness we so desperately need.

I would like to thank, first and foremost, Colin Easton for being so open and honest on camera. I was able to tell a great story because of it and because of the talent of my crew, as well as the talent of producer Patricia Beckerman, editor Tyler F. Gamsby, DP Chris Kempinski, and composer Mario Vaira, I feel we have quite the little gem on our hands.

Thank you again to our 171 Indiegogo supporters. It simply could not have happened without you. Lastly, a huge thank you to my friends, family and the love of my life, Jason, for always supporting me in what is often a crazy and unpredictable industry.

About Kate Green

Having been an active content creator in the film and television industry for over 17 years, Kate Green knows the value of a clear and powerful story told through a visual medium. While having worked in both fiction and non-fiction genres, Kate has been able to focus her talents and experience to help create over 100 hours of well-rounded, intriguing, quality broadcast programming.

Most recently, Kate has completed the documentary Not a Stranger – a snapshot into the life of Colin Easton’s journey and the people he meets as he endeavors to talk to one stranger every day for an entire year.

Kate has produced three short films, Joanna Makes a Friend (2010 MPPIA short film winner), Funny Business (one of the 2011 Crazy 8’s winners) and the corporate drama Shadowplay (2013).

While showing a passion for scripted work, Kate has also a proven love for factual and lifestyle television. This was put into practice when she acted as the senior story producer for W Network’s Shannon & Sophie, story producer for Keeping Canada Alive (CBC) and field director for Game of Homes (W Network).

Kate was also line producer on HGTV’s hit series Urban Suburban season one and directed the travel series Discovering Great Towns season two. Kate returned for season two of Urban Suburban as the senior story producer.

As a director/producer on seasons 13 and 14 of The New Driver’s Seat, an automotive review show, the high action Canadian Rally Championships and the adventure racing documentary Raid the North Extreme, Kate also brings a unique understanding to the production and creation of live action reality and automotive television. Due to this experience and passion for high action reality, Kate was hired to produce the Vancouver episode of Strangers in Danger for Fuel TV, a subsidiary of FOX TV in the US.

In 2012 Kate was accepted into the NSI Totally Television program through the National Screen Institute and was thrilled to continue development on the dramatic cop procedural The Genius Factor by Jennifer Little.

Kate is a proud graduate of Malaspina University’s Technical Theatre Program, the UBC Entertainment Administration Program, NSI Lifestyle & Reality Series Producer and NSI Totally Television. In 2008 Kate was elected to the board of directors for Women in Film & Television Vancouver and in 2009 elected as vice president and chair of the awards and mentorship committee.

With all of her work, Kate shows an ability to produce quality entertainment on time and on budget regardless of the genre, due to her passion and enthusiasm for each project and the story it tells.
