ON THE EDGE

Edge is about physical boundaries, intellectual concepts and heart-felt emotions that embody both certainty and ambiguity. Fences and horizons are edges holding clear divisions while shadows and waves are edges in constant flux. Innovative ideas are on "the cutting edge," and feeling anxious is "being on edge." Edges are personal and universal.

Philosopher Eugene Gendlin, professor emeritus at the University of Chicago and founder of the Focusing Institute, developed Thinking At the Edge  - a way to think and speak about our world and ourselves by generating terms from a "felt sense." According to Gendlin this is "a systematic way to articulate in new terms something which needs to be said but is at first only an inchoate “bodily sense.”  In other words (if I understand correctly!) it's about our conscious mind being able to articulate what our unconscious mind already knows!

When an idea can be articulated from a "felt sense"...
we know our WHY which tells us HOW and WHAT to do.

Through his TED talk Simon Sinek gave us Start With WHY.
The visual edges of Simon's "Golden Circle" illustrate how unity of feeling, concept and action, WHY, HOW, WHAT lead to greater success in communication and production.

I believe making art manifests Thinking At the Edge - an act of bringing the invisible and inexplicable into form. WHY do you want your marks to be what they are?  The answer to this question reveals HOW you make marks and use color, which results in WHAT you create.  And oh by the way, this applies to all realms of life too.

So make art and make friends with your edges!  You will get to know your WHY along the way...

Agnes Martin Retrospective at the Guggenheim museum, NYC

Reviews of Agnes Martin's retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York start with: "Run to see Agnes Martin at the Guggenheim, Then Stay A While..." and another: "The Joy of Reading Between Agnes Martin's Lines..." are statements as truthful as they come.

Martin employs edges with sharply defined lines containing deceptively simple color.  Her work stands at the edge of exactitude and spiritual transcendence. Something that is revealed the longer you stay with them, and is completely missing in any reproduction of her work. RUN, then stay a while to catch the magic.
