Good morning and thanks for starting your week with us. Here are some of today's top headlines. 'No excuse': Seven men are still on the lam after a jailbreak in New Orleans, and Gov. Jeff Landry on Sunday tightened his grip on the city in the name of public safety, ordering multiple state investigations into an escape that he said “epitomizes a progressive criminal justice system.” Read the latest here. Conflicting calendars: Independently operated charter schools have the freedom to make their own instructional decisions and, in turn, parents have their pick of schools. But that freedom comes with a trade-off: It creates inconsistencies across this system that burden families with children attending different schools. Among the most burdensome discrepancies, as Marie Fazio reports, are differing school calendars. 'American Idol' finale: Louisiana teen John Foster didn't take home the gold on "American Idol" Sunday night, but he's still a winner to us. Judy Bergeron has all the details from the heartbreaking season finale. Thanks for reading. Check back throughout the day for more news, entertainment and sports from The Times-Picayune. |
