Mariano Rajoy announces dismissal of Carles Puigdemont and his regional government and calls regional elections in Catalonia on 21 December


In a statement made at Moncloa Palace following the meeting of the Council of Ministers, the President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, explained the measures adopted to recover legality and co-existence in Catalonia, and to guarantee the rights of all the people of Spain, "with all the weight of the law and reason behind them, and in a peaceful and moderate fashion".

Regional Parliament of Catalonia has approved "a criminal action", says Mariano Rajoy


At the end of the sitting in the Upper House of Parliament authorising the application of the measures contained in Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution to recover legality in Catalonia, the President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, called for calm from citizens and stressed that "the government will take such decisions as are necessary to recover legality".

In his speech to the Upper House of Parliament in Madrid during the session called to vote on triggering Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution, the President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, said that "the existence of unequal categories of citizens" cannot be recognised "to appease this defiance". He went on to add that this mechanism is being triggered "to prevent the abuse of Catalonia" and "to consolidate its autonomy".

At the government control session held in the Lower House of Parliament, the President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, explained that the aim of Article 155 is "to re-establish legality". He also added that "there is no other way out aside from elections" in Catalonia, "precisely because the law has been broken".

Government approves initial measures provided for in application of Article 155 of the Constitution


The extraordinary Council of Ministers, after receiving the authorisation of the Upper House of Parliament, approved five decrees as the initial measures to recover legality in Catalonia and to restore its self-governance. These include the removal of the Regional Government of Catalonia and the calling of elections to be held on 21 December.
