If you miss gathering for live performance, join us for a conversation with Cal Shakes artistic director Eric Ting and dramaturg Philippa Kelly about how the local theater community is navigating the coronavirus crisis and what Shakespeare can teach us about humor in the midst of upheaval. Then, we'll screen the Public Theater's production of the Bard's Much Ado About Nothing recorded live at Free Shakespeare in the Park for Great Performances.

The Future of Genomics and COVID-19

Join KQED for a virtual screening and discussion about the evolution of the science of genetics, the future of gene editing, and the role that genomics has to play in fighting COVID-19. We'll screen an excerpt from The Gene: An Intimate History, a major new four-hour documentary from Ken Burns and Barak Goodman, adapted from the award-winning book of the same name by Pulitzer Prize winning author Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee.After the screening we'll be joined by Kevin Doxzen of the Innovative Genomics Institute to discuss the lab's leading research into CRISPR-based genome editing, Bay Area efforts at sequencing coronavirus genomes, and how genomics labs are pivotal for developing diagnostics and treatment.

Representations of Asian Americans in pop culture have a history - and present - of racist stereotypes and one-dimensional depictions. Join us to watch clips from the new PBS series, Asian Americans, followed by a discussion moderated by SoCal Wanderer host Rosey Alvero and featuring series producer S. Leo Chiang and sociologist/pop culture expert Nancy Wang Yuen. This conversation will look at the history of Asian American representation in pop culture and media, and how Asian Americans have fought against these depictions to craft their own narratives and define a complex Asian American identity.
