Who gets to define it? Who gets to dream it? With nearly 40 million residents there are endless individual variations, but they are unified by a common, persistent yearning for some vision of a better life on the horizon.
Join The California Report Magazine for an evening of personal storytelling, live music, and movement, showcasing the rich variety, passion, and depth that animates all California dreamers. Featuring stories by journalists April Dembosky, Peter Gilstrap, and host Sasha Khokha, performances by dancer My-Linh and R&B singer Michael Marshall, and live epistolary readings by California residents about their own lived pursuits of golden opportunity. Your state, your dreams -- brought to poignant life onstage.

| | How does economic inequality threaten the social fabric of the Bay Area? And what are we going to do about it together?
Part of the belief in American social mobility rests largely upon our faith that there is opportunity in education. Despite soaring college costs and historically high levels of student debt, an investment in a college degree still predicts higher earning power over a lifetime of work. Having access to quality primary education is one indicator of success in higher education. So how does the Bay Area score when it comes to residents at lower income levels getting access to quality schools? Are we making progress, or are the policies and systems we have in place replicating the income inequality in the Bay Area? And what can we do to turn the tables? Can quality public education level the opportunity and equity gaps?
KQED's Mina Kim hosts Kyla Johnson-Trammell (Oakland Unified School District), Patrick Murphy (Public Policy Institute of California), Na'ilah Suad Nasir (Spencer Foundation) for a discussion about the impact of economic inequality on Bay Area public education, how that redounds upon the health of our local democracy, and how to achieve full and equitable funding for schools. | | |
