| There was a moment in Sunday’s NASCAR race at Watkins Glen where it was sink or swim time for Kimi Raikkonen. On his Cup Series debut, he was restarting from the fringe of the Top 10 as he’d gained track position from those frontrunners chasing a likely race-winning, two-stop strategy. With only a few laps of ‘The Glen’ under his belt, and not many more in the Next Gen car in total, he could have sunk like a stone – but instead he went forwards. Peaking in eighth, before the likes of Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson zoomed by, Raikkonen was enjoying a very solid run.
Then, soon after the restart for the final stage when he was mired back in the pack, he got caught up in a typical NASCAR turf war. His car clipped another because of the pack checking up to avoid a spinner, and his steering wheel was yanked from his hands – injuring his wrist – before he plunged into the tyrewall.
