We're still a couple of days away from the best-of-three NCAA Baton Rouge Super Regional between LSU and Kentucky at Alex Box Stadium. The extra day of waiting — the series starts at 2 p.m. Saturday and will be televised on ESPN2 — gives us a chance for some football season-worthy analysis. To wit: What do the Tigers need to do to win this here series and advance to Omaha? We've got three LSU baseball beat alumns — our present and talented beat writer Leah Vann, the witty and urbane Wilson Alexander and yours truly (I had the LSU baseball beat when Leah and Wilson were like 2 or 3) — to give you our responses in the time-honored knights of the baseball round table format. After that, we ride to Camelot (it's only a model — shhh!). For those who never saw "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," my apologies for indulging in the previous joke. There was a time when the major league draft overlapped with the College World Series. Then it overlapped with the super regional round. Now, sensibly, the draft has been pushed back to July, well after the CWS ends. How does that lack of distraction help the players this week? We discuss. Meanwhile, there are only three finalists for the prestigious Golden Spikes Award this year, and two of them play for LSU. We'll let you guess which two before you click here for the rather obvious answers. The NCAA track and field championships got under way Wednesday in Austin, Texas. Our Sheldon Mickles has LSU's early results for you, while I chime in with a column on one of LSU's top athletes, reigning NCAA 100-meter hurdles champion Alia Armstrong. There's a new No. 1 in the world of women's amateur golf: it's LSU's Ingrid Lindblad of Sweden. We tell you how she got to the top of the pyramid. Finally, we've got odds for you on seven of the eight NCAA super regionals. Seven, because the Wake Forest-Alabama super is off the board. Bama baseball has been off the board since that betting scandal following the Crimson Tide's series at LSU earlier this season. That's all for now folks. Keep on clicking right here for all our LSU baseball coverage and other sports on the LSU scene. We thank you for your readership. You put the "super" in our super regional. Scott Rabalais |
