Plus, SLC passes sales tax increase for downtown revitalization
Good morning! Here are today’s temperatures: ☀️ 42 – 80° in Logan ☀️ 57 – 84° in Salt Lake ☀️ 66 – 99° in St. George I have a number of friends and family members who attended a semester or two of college and realized it wasn’t for them. Now barbers, mechanics and cabinet makers, they are all very happy with their decision to move to trade work, and they aren’t alone. Emma Pitts reports that a growing number of young Americans are switching to blue-collar professions. She spoke to two young hairstylists who discussed finding fulfillment, financial stability and opportunity in work they truly enjoy. Read more about why Gen Z is shifting to trade work. | | Suzanne Bates reports the first and only vice presidential debate was a substantive and civil exchange, a nice change of pace in today's political climate. “Ohio Sen. JD Vance said Americans were better off under Trump, while speaking about his family’s experiences struggling with poverty as he grew up in Ohio,” she writes. “Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said Harris would help the middle class, while speaking about policies he championed as Minnesota’s governor.” Read more from Suzanne for an overview of how Vance and Walz responded to questions about Iran and Israel, climate change, immigration, the economy, abortion and more. Samuel Benson watched the debate from an event hosted by Braver Angels, a nonprofit dedicated to political depolarization. He also noted a civil, positive atmosphere. “The only rules at this debate watch party, as explained at the start, were ‘honesty, dignity and respect,’” he reports. “A dozen conservatives showed up; a dozen liberals, too.” Read more from Sam about what happens when “red” and “blue” voters watch the vice presidential debate together with the goal of respecting each other more by the end.

Dennis Romboy reports the City Council approved a sales tax increase after a public hearing Tuesday to generate funds for the creation of a sports, entertainment, culture and convention district in the city center. What you need to know about the tax increase: The tax will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2025. The city can now raise its current 7.75% sales tax rate one-half of a percent — pushing it to 8.25% over no more than 30 years. The tax does not apply to groceries and major purchases like vehicles. The tax hike is anticipated to generate $1.2 billion over the 30-year life of the agreement. The renovation of the Delta Center is expected to start in April, as the Deseret News previously reported.
