4 Secrets to Handling Emotionally Charged Arguments
This âBarking Up the Wrong Treeâ post (Jean, link) pulls content from psychiatrist Mark Goulstonâs book Talking to Crazy. The 4 secrets are applicable to all conversations and provide some powerful insights into handling really tough and scary conversations. One secret:
List the darkest, most ugly thoughts they might be having about you. The ones they might be terribly ashamed of. Donât be afraid to get extreme. Youâre unloading the guilt from them. They wonât say it â so you will. âYou probably hate me. You wish you never married me. Sometimes you probably hope I would just die.â

Infiltrate Talent Networks
David shared the phrase âinfiltrate talent networksâ as a better label for the âfishing holesâ I reference in locating pools of talent from which to recruit. Pick a company, university, adjacent sector, or location from which to source talent. Once you get a few to join your company, they will recruit their colleagues. The same for customers. Northrock Partners recruiting NBA great Tony Parker to lead a new division focused on managing the wealth of professional athletes and entertainers. Important Hiring Question/Criteria
Dee Hock, the founder of Visa International, was a mentor to Chip Conley (and me). Chip shared, this week, one of Deeâs best hiring questions â one you ask yourself as you consider hiring someone âWhat if this person worked for our biggest competitor?â If you donât care, then maybe not the right person for you. But if you do, then hire them if they meet the following criteria:
Hire and promote first on the basis of integrity; second, motivation; third, capacity; fourth, understanding; fifth, knowledge; and last and least, experience.
Without integrity, motivation is dangerous.
Without motivation, capacity is impotent.
Without capacity, understanding is limited.
Without understanding, knowledge is meaningless.
Without knowledge, experience is blind.
This aligns with our Will, Values, Results, Skills criteria but admittedly, missing the integrity piece. Integrity must come first!!
