Nobel laureates slam EC over funding priorities Three of the world’s most eminent scientists have warned that photonics, an area set to create 1 million new jobs in Europe by 2030, could be seriously compromised if it is not included in the Horizon Europe draft funding priority list. In an open letter to the European Commission, the Nobel laureates have heavily criticised the decision not to include photonics as a specific visible objective within the next €100 billion research and innovation programme. The letter, addressed to Commissioner Gabriel and Commissioner Moedas and signed by Nobel Prize winners in Physics and Chemistry, says that deprioritizing photonics “would be a serious strategic mistake”. Among the signatories were: • Professor Gérard Albert Mourou, a Physics Nobel Prize winner for the invention of ‘chirped pulse amplification’ a technique used to create ultrashort-pulse, very high-intensity petawatt laser pulses. • Professor Stefan W. Hell who developed a method in which one light pulse causes fluorescent molecules to glow, while another causes all molecules except those in a very narrow area to become dark. • Professor Theodor W. Hansch, whose work on the ‘optical frequency comb’ technique won him, along with John L. Hall and Roy J. Glauber, a joint Nobel Prize. The Nobel Laureate winners believe that the photonics sector “is an important building block of the next digital revolution” and that it is “essential for powering the future European digital economy”. A.SPIRE General Assembly & 5th Anniversary Cocktail |
This year, the General Assembly (G.A.) coincided with a very important milestone for A.SPIRE. 2019 marks the 5th anniversary of the creation of the SPIRE contractual Public-Private Partnership (cPPP) and the beginning of the collaboration between the eight industrial sectors (cement, ceramics, chemicals, engineering, minerals, non-ferrous metals, steel and water). For the past five years, the cPPP’s mission has been to ensure the development of enabling technologies and best practices with the purpose to contribute to a resource efficient process industry. It has and continues to do so with great success! The G.A. invited members to participate and discuss statutory issues relating to membership, planning, governance, advocacy and budget. In addition, Ignacio Martin, from CIRCE and the co-chair of the SPIRE Partnership Board, presented an overview of the SPIRE projects from 2018 and the next steps for the Horizon 2020 work programme for 2019-2020. It was also announced that he would be stepping down as co-chair and that the process to search for a new candidate would be launched soon. The topic of bridging projects’ outputs to industrial exploitation, was brought up by Amy Peace from Britest, who sought engagement from members to find solutions on how to make results more tangible and providing the right climate to fully utilise the results. EIT RawMaterials moves forward in implementing Lighthouse innovation programmes |
Raw Materials and Circular Societies Lighthouse Lighthouse innovation programmes (Lighthouses) are large-scale and long-term coordinated innovation initiatives that address critical and specific raw materials challenges for Europe. They are mission approaches to innovation and education challenges, directly steering EIT RawMaterials KIC (Knowledge and Innovation Community) activities towards the achievement of its strategic objectives and impact KPIs. Lighthouses will generate tangible solutions for societal challenges that have raw materials at their core.In doing so, they will enable the KIC to raise awareness about the role and importance of raw materials in the sustainable society, and create a positive perception about raw materials and their associated industries. The concept of a circular economy has recently gained traction in Europe as a positive, solution-based perspective for achieving economic development within increasing environmental constraints. Raw, processed and advanced materials from primary and secondary sources are the backbone of the economy. A radical shift is required from linear to circular thinking. End-of-life products must be considered as a resource for another cycle, while losses and stocks of unused materials must be minimized and valorized along the value chain. In addition, the interactions between materials must be considered to define the best circular solution from a systemic standpoint. Awareness of the benefits of closing material loops must be raised in society. The successful transition to the circular economy at the global scale depends on the reliable and sustainable supply and management of raw materials Read the entire article here. |

Last EUREC College of Members & Workshop on sector coupling in Vienna |
In November 2018, EUREC and AIT co-organised the expert workshop on ‘Sector coupling for local systems as enabler for the energy transition’. EUREC co-organised this activity on the framework of EUREC’s biannual College of Members, 22nd – 23rd November 2018. EUREC President, Rainer Janssen, chaired the workshop with focus on sector coupling, a hot topic during the SET Plan conference, which took place the same week in Vienna. Gwennaël Joliffe-Botrel, from the Directorate General of Research and Innovation of the European Commission opened the workshop with a Q&R on latest Horizon Europe developments and SET Plan. During the second day of the College of Members, EUREC organised a networking workshop, only for members, dedicated to upcoming H2020 proposals. The participants splited in two groups: one focused on development of solutions based on renewable resources that provided flexibility to the energy system; and the other group brainstormed on Social Sciences and Humanities aspects of the clean energy transition. On the 23rd November, EUREC also held an internal affairs meeting during which, EUREC member, Venizelos Efthymiou announced that FOSS Research Centre for Sustainable Energy will host the next College of Members in Cyprus, on the 7 & 8 May 2019. The EUREC members internal affairs will take place on the first day, and on the 8th May, EUREC will organise a workshop together with EERA- JP on Smart Grids - Energy Communities: Operational and functional needs. |
