Dry weather aids ongoing flood fight in northern Minnesota. With a dry forecast, the National Weather Service predicts that the water level on Rainy Lake — which is threatening hundreds of properties east of International Falls — will rise by only a couple inches over the next seven days. That compares to some days in the past couple weeks where the lake rose that much in a single day, swollen by a heavy winter snowpack and then spring rains.
Play portrays generations of Latinas struggles with identity. When Josefina Lopez wrote the play, she set it in 1987, not long after then President Ronald Reagan granted amnesty to undocumented immigrants. The play was also made into a movie in 2002 starring America Ferrera. Given the year it was set and the issues addressed, co-director Lelis Brito was at first a bit uncertain if the play would still resonate. And it was something she brought up to co-director Adlyn Carreras. But the issues, as well as the play, still resonate, Carreras said.
Project aims to track the state of Minnesota’s loons. Walter Piper, a biology professor at Chapman University in southern California, hopes to get a better idea if what’s plaguing Wisconsin’s loons – possibly biting black flies that drive them off the nest - also could be affecting Minnesota’s beloved state bird. Piper’s research has found that Wisconsin’s adult loon population has fallen an estimated 22 percent in the last 25 years. In addition, loon chicks are smaller and the survival rate of young loons is lower. | |
