Behind the hyped up enthusiasm for generative AI, a massive infrastructure buildout is underway.
Cloud providers have poured billions into new and existing data centers and are promising to maintain high levels of capital expenditures to meet enterprise demand. Microsoft’s groundbreaking on a $3.3 billion Wisconsin site last month was just one of the hyperscaler’s many multibillion-dollar moves in a global strategy to expand capacity.
The downstream impacts on the enterprise are hard to divine at these early stages, but LLM technology is surely reshaping the foundation of cloud resources. It’s a story we’ll follow as Microsoft and its hyperscale competitors continue the buildouts.
