Where writers come
together to create.
eWriteabout July 2025
The Gold Coast Writers' Association is a volunteer-run
not-for-profit organisation.

Our mission is to encourage and support writers from all genres, age groups, and levels of experience to grow, learn, and excel in their craft.
We meet on the third Saturday of the month.
President's Note

Dear members and guests,

It has been an exciting month as we launched our new-look website and introduced a few focus groups. Two of the groups (Sci-Fi/Fantasy and All-Genre Wine catch-ups) are now established with more groups to follow soon, including a nonfiction critique group and a book club. Details will be posted in our GCWA Members’ Facebook group. If you are interested in connecting with other writers in a smaller group setting with a specific focus, please email me at [email protected], so I can help you get connected.

Our refreshed website also boasts some compelling new blog posts that I’m sure you will glean some fresh tips from. Vijay Fitzgerald informs us that memoir is made up of meaningful moments. Our readers connect to us when we engage them in the emotions of the scene, and when we show rather than tell our story. Perhaps you are ready to launch your book? Damian Hussey tells us that Kickstarter campaigns can work if you set them up well, and have a clear idea of the outcomes you want to achieve. But if you can’t get your writing started or stuck moving forward, Kasia Radzka provides some refreshing tips on how to move past feeling stuck in our writing. An overarching theme is being kind to yourself and doing the things you love.

Current members of GCWA received an email this week about our upcoming AGM. Each year, all committee roles are vacated, leaving an opportunity for any current financial GCWA member to nominate themselves for one of the roles. As an association, GCWA requires a committee to continue to operate. We are hosting an information evening on Tuesday, 22nd July at 6:30 pm at the Robina Community Centre. We invite you to come along to learn more about the committee roles and functions. You may find that your skills and experience are well-suited to one of the roles. However, there will be no pressure to make any commitments or to nominate for committee roles on the night.

Join us this month for another line-up of exciting speakers: Briony Benjamin, author of Life Is Tough, But So Are You, and David Tensen, workshop presenter, poet, and author of multiple books.

Hope to see you there!

TIPS AND INSIGHTS
From Last Month's Speakers
on Screenwriting

Tips from Josh Hale:
  • When writing, you don't have to stay in your own lane.
  • Make sure everything is correct - don't just get it out there. Make sure the heart is there.
  • A dollar made in your own craft is better than a thousand of someone else's.

Tips from Damian Hussey:
  • Script structure and formatting are important.
  • Write from a third person point of view.
  • Only describe what is seen and heard.
  • Avoid directing!

brilliant workshops and author talks.

Turn up the tension this July

There’s something irresistible about a good mystery, a chilling murder, a twist you never saw coming, or a detective who breaks all the rules. This July, Gold Coast Libraries are delving into Dangerous Words, a month-long spotlight on stories that thrill, unsettle, and surprise.
