What will fix the crisis?

In 2022, more than 1 in 10 young children had a parent who had to quit, turn down or drastically change a job in the previous year because of child care problems, according to recent reporting from AL.com, The Seattle Times and the national Education Reporting Collaborative. And that burden often falls most on mothers, who shoulder more child-rearing responsibilities and are far more likely to leave a job to care for kids. We know our American child care system (if we ever had one) is in crisis. Who's working to fix it? Join AL.com and The Seattle Times' Education Labs Wednesday, May 22, at 3:30 p.m. Eastern/2:30 p.m. Central/12:30 p.m. Pacific, for a virtual event with Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Lisa Hamilton, CEO of the Annie E. Casey Foundation. See the livestream here. Britt, Murray and Hamilton each have worked on child care, family and education issues in the national level, and in their states. The event will be moderated by journalists Trisha Powell Crain, of AL.com, and Daniel Beekman, of the Times. Have a question you want us to ask? Submit them in advance using this form. Find more information about how to access the event here. To get an alert when the livestream starts, register for this Facebook event or make sure you are following AL.com on YouTube.
