How the London-centric approach to politics is not working
Hello reader, On Wednesday 13 March, I will be interviewing Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram, the mayors of Greater Manchester and the Liverpool City Region, for a special livestreamed Guardian Live event. Book your tickets here. Since taking up their respective posts in 2017, Burnham and Rotheram have been vocal about the challenges of modern British politics, and the failed attempts at ‘levelling up’ by successive Tory administrations. Their new book, Head North, makes a compelling argument that the ‘Westminster knows best’ approach to politics is not working. How can we spread political and economic power, and prosperity throughout the UK? In this live and interactive event, I will be asking Burnham and Rotheram to outline their ambitious vision and how they see our country operating beyond the central Westminster system. I do hope you can join us and send in your own questions for the two mayors. Book your tickets here. Helen Pidd North of England editor, the Guardian |
