Air show excitement: Thousands of people packed Nobbys Beach and Foreshore Park last weekend to get a glimpse of historic and modern planes from the Royal Australian Air Force fleet at the Newcastle-Williamtown Air Show. Spitfires and F35s were among at least 16 different types of aircraft which took to the sky in two aerial shows. Rail infrastructure protected: Funding for the High Speed Rail Authority, which is tasked with planning a fast rail between Newcastle and Sydney, has been protected under a sweeping federal government infrastructure spending review. The government also increased funding for a new bridge at Clarence Town in the review. Abattoir ramps up: Australia's largest meat processor has announced plans to add a second daily production shift to its rosters next year as cattle supply continues to grow. JBS Australia has more than 70 sites across the country, including one in Scone. The additional shifts, to be added from next year, will mean the local abattoir can operate for up to 20 hours a day, five days a week. Protesters get blessing: The Anglican Dean of Newcastle Reverend Katherine Bowyer says a planned blockade of the city's port is in line with the church's commitment to caring for creation. Reverend Bowyer this week blessed activists and boats that will be used for a paddle out. Thousands of people are expected to attend the three-day protest from this Friday, which is calling for an end to all coal exports from Newcastle by 2030. Transmission consults promised: State Energy Minister Penny Sharpe says the government will work with landholders to finalise a transmission line route through the Hunter. EnergyCo has identified a 115-kilometre route between Bayswater and Eraring to run the transmission lines, set to connect renewable energy projects to the grid. Some 85 per cent of the infrastructure is set to be built on public land but about 80 private land holders will be affected. Tomago battery storage: Energy company AGL is looking to build a multi-million dollar battery storage system at Port Stephens. The system, with capacity of up to 500 megawatts, is proposed for a site on the Pacific Highway at Tomago, not far from an electricity substation. AGL is seeking approval from the NSW Department of Planning and the plans are open for public comment until mid-next month. Golden (boot) girls: Newcastle Knights fullback Tamika Upton and five-eighth Georgia Roche are in the running for the Golden Boot Award. The award, commissioned by International Rugby League, recognises outstanding performances from players representing their country. Jets game ground change: Newcastle Jets executive chair Shane Mattiske says it's disappointing to not play this weekend's men's F3 Derby at Hunter Stadium because of poor pitch conditions. The stadium recently hosted the Australian Supercross Championship, when it was transformed into a motorcycle track. It was decided the best option is to move the game to the home ground of the Central Coast Mariners. |
