When ABC Newcastle's Jill Emberson was told she had between 16 and 24 months to live, she screwed up her bucket list, overcame embarrassment and vowed to fight for change. Enraged by the knowledge that her form of cancer had been underfunded for decades, Jill decided if she couldn't save herself she would sure as hell make a difference for the next generation. Ovarian Cancer Australia chief executive Jane Hill says Jill's advocacy has been the catalyst for a $20 million boost in research funding. | |

Five dead as chopper vanishes off Anna Bay | |
The search for a Bell Iroquois helicopter that crashed off Anna Bay last Friday, carrying four passengers and the pilot, continues today. The helicopter, flying from Brisbane to Bankstown via Coffs Harbour, disappeared off the coast north of Newcastle about 6.15pm on Friday. No mayday call was issued. | |

Skipper denies knowledge of 700kg in cocaine | |
Two men on trial over a $245 million cocaine importation racket used encrypted mobile phones to help arrange for the drugs to be sailed from the South Pacific to Australia, a court has been told. Craig William Lembke, 49, and Daniel Terence Percy are on trial for allegedly conspiring to import a commercial quantity of cocaine. Mr Lembke's barrister told the court his client had never denied sailing the catamaran, but denied ever knowing drugs were on board. | |

Former station to become visitor info centre | |
Ownership of the former Civic railway station building is to be transferred to Newcastle Council. The revamped building will then be re-opened as a visitor information centre early in 2020. The design will maintain the rail heritage and character of the site, and supply tourist maps, brochures and souvenirs. | |
