BY ANNETTE SISCO | STAFF WRITER Greetings, New Orleans food fans. We begin on a serious note this week, because the cancellation of Jazz Fest came as a blow to so many of our beloved restaurants and bars. We checked in to see how the industry is rolling with this latest punch. Not surprisingly, renewed cautions against COVID-19 have caused tension around the table. Meanwhile, some places are moving forward with plans to open. Let's dig in... 1. Jazz Fest reverb. A hoped-for October Jazz Festival, rescheduled from the spring, was canceled Sunday as the deadly COVID delta variant surged in Louisiana. The ripple effects have been far and wide: Dinner reservations canceled, catered parties called off, Fair Grounds food vendors losing a big chunk of income. Ian McNulty gets feedback at Liuzza's by the Track, Mosca's, Clesi's and more. 2. Hospitality rules. With mask mandates and vaccination requirements popping up around town, some restaurants have seen pushback. But toxic social media behavior doesn't belong at the table. Here's a reminder that hospitality is a two-way street. 3. Wait! There's more. Reactions were mixed as New Orleans bars and restaurants started asking for proof of vaccination. There's a Jimmy Buffett connection to Donald Link's Four Seasons restaurant; PeeWee's Crabcakes just keeps growing; and a Lower Garden District restaurant is transformed into a Mexican food showplace. 4. Winging it. Looking for the ultimate wings? Check out a long menu of ideas from connoisseurs on our Where NOLA Eats Facebook group, then feast on saucy rejoinders from, well, the snobs... 5. That's a wrap! Tacos or tortillas and some pretty basic spices are the foundation of a delicious, convenient meal, says food writer and home cook extraordinaire Judy Walker. Consider her recipes for salmon soft tacos, breakfast tacos with egg and lighter old-school tacos. That's it for the food newsletter, but in New Orleans the food news never stops.
