Greetings from New York. If you can make it here, the song tells us, you can make it anywhere. Saturday night, LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels will try to make it as big as anyone who ever played college football, as aims to become winner of the 89th Heisman Trophy. The presentation ceremony begins at 7 p.m. CST on ESPN, with the announcement coming shortly before 8. Daniels will try to join Joe Burrow and Billy Cannon, LSU's only Heisman winners, on the highest plateau of the program's football glory. If he wins, LSU would become just the 12th school with three or more Heisman winners. Members of the Burrow and Cannon families know how life-changing winning American sports' most famous award can be. In my column, I write about how Daniels' dreams from childhood now may be about to become reality. Our photographer Michael Johnson has a photo gallery of Daniels' day in New York. One LSU player's dreams didn't come true, unfortunately. Wide receiver Malik Nabers lost the Biletnikoff Award by one excruciating vote. No word whether LSU will demand a recount. Just kidding, but it is a pretty painful result for the nation's leading receiver. Daniels continued to add to his award haul, capturing the Walter Camp and Davey O'Brien awards. He missed out on the Maxwell Award, like the Walter Camp a national player of the year award. Though Daniels looks like a heavy favorite to win the Heisman, the Maxwell is often a precursor to winning the Heisman. So keep an eye on Maxwell winner Michael Penix at Saturday's awards ceremony. Daniels remains noncommital about whether or not he will play in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Wisconsin, but we are finding out about more Tigers and their future with the program. Former Texas A&M defensive end Gabriel Reliford has decided to transfer in, but current defensive end Quency Wiggins has decided to enter the transfer portal, as has backup center Marlon Martinez. The LSU men's basketball team tries to do something Saturday that the Tigers haven't done since 2015. Meanwhile, LSU continues to wait frustratingly for a resolution to the Jalen Cook eligibility issue while coach Matt McMahon weighs in. Thank you as always for reading and subscribing. We'll be here in New York on Saturday to bring you all the coverage of Daniels' quest for the Heisman, so as the saying goes, keep it tuned right here. Scott Rabalais |
