| rantnrave:// The PHILADELPHIA 76ERS canceled R&B singer SEVYN STREETER's scheduled national anthem performance before Tuesday's season opener because she was wearing a "We Matter" jersey. In a short statement loaded with unspoken context, the team said it 1) "encourages meaningful actions to drive social change," 2) wants to "bring people together" and 3) is in the process of moving "from symbolic gestures to action." That last is packed with enough shade to envelop both a singer who once duetted with CHRIS BROWN and a quarterback who plays 2,800 miles away. "Multiple players" were upset by the team's action, according to ESPN. "Some players did not seem particularly outraged," PHILLY.COM reported. Those two statements, it should be noted, do not contradict each other. Divided we ball. Expect more of this in the coming weeks and months... RICHARD SHERMAN thinks the NFL is inconsistent in how it polices touchdown celebrations, how it judges catches and how it treats domestic violence. And he thinks ROGER GOODELL "simply has too much power." Other than that, all good... VOCATIV's ROBERT SILVERMAN catches up with DR. ARMIN TEHRANY, a go-to medical expert for stories about injured athletes, to discuss the ethics of talking about athletes who aren't your patients. Per Silverman, Tehrany's publicists have offered his expertise to Vocativ within hours of more than 20 athletes getting hurt over the past six months alone. A fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse into how "your sports injury story sausage gets made"... Having successfully negotiated with the state of NEVADA for a publicly funded football stadium in LAS VEGAS, casino mogul SHELDON ADELSON still has to negotiate with the team he hopes will use it... There are few people I know that like baseball as much as Jeff Sullivan. I’m continually jealous of the way he can see things that I can’t see in the game, spotting little details that make for fantastic stories, and engaging with aspects of the sport that most people gloss over. | |
