| rantnrave:// Having achieved his dream job and won the only game he will ever get to participate in in said dream job, SAM ALLARDYCE proceeded to stick his foot so far down his mouth that he could easily kick a soccer ball with it – if only he were ever allowed on a soccer field again, which is unclear at this moment. Though some kind words have been said on his behalf, no one is rushing to the divisive manager's defense. The videotapes do not do him any favors. But can we talk about journalism for a minute? The TELEGRAPH's un-bylined, undercover series "FOOTBALL FOR SALE," which cost the ENGLISH national team manager his job on Tuesday, is in the middle of exposing a number of other managers who it says it caught in its sting. Helpful explainers here and here. The newspaper also informs us it "has agreed to give all relevant transcripts to the FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION and has also passed information to the police." Which is troubling. Journalists should not be acting as surrogates for the police or any other law-enforcement body, nor should they be acting as de facto investigators for the organizations they cover. There needs to be a clear distinction between a reporter's notebook and a sheriff's badge. The apparent breach of journalism ethics is almost as alarming as Allardyce's alleged breach of soccer ethics. And it's a considerable breach of soccer ethics, if the undercover journalists have it right... MIAMI says farewell to JOSÉ FERNÁNDEZ... | The appointment of a manager who still had unanswered questions regarding transfers in the mid-2000s hanging over him was unusual and perhaps we should not be surprised it ended after one game. | |

As Sam Allardyce lost his job as England manager following the Telegraph’s disclosures about his conduct, the Football Association faced a separate crisis over the alleged bribery of managers. Football agents were filmed by undercover reporters boasting about how many managers they had paid, with one agent saying that in football, “everything is under the table”.

"It’s what I’d call moving from striking and fielding sports – like baseball and cricket, which are reasonably straightforward in terms of analysis – into the invasion-territorial sports, where at the core there’s the tactical coordination of a group of players. That’s the exciting challenge because there is so much more going on that you have to take into account."
