I have such reverence for [pop]. A lot of musicians think they can do pop, and the ones who don’t succeed are the ones who don’t have the reverence—who think it’s just a dumb version of other music. You need to be awe-struck. | | Tove Lo at the O2 Ritz in Manchester, England, March 15, 2017. (Andrew Benge/Redferns/Getty Images) | | | | “I have such reverence for [pop]. | rantnrave:// In praise of the totally-not-cool kids: ED SHEERAN is "relatable" and an "everyman for everyone" and he's what dance music is missing, JOSH BAINES argues in an essay for THUMP. Baines says the current dance scene is ruled by a couple different types of untouchable superstars ("clean eating yoga buffs" and "line-racking banter boys") and is badly in need of one that fans can actually touch... New ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAMERS PEARL JAM "Might Not Be Cool, But That Doesn't Mean They Aren't Great," according to the headline of CRAIG JENKINS' appreciation in VULTURE, in which the writer articulates an argument that's been made a thousand or two times before but which, like Pearl Jam itself, continues to be worth hearing, at least once in a while... (But speaking of PEARL JAM).. Sweet new live sets from the KEXP studio: SINKANE and WEYES BLOOD... Much like his contemporaries MICK FLEETWOOD and JOHN MCVIE, J. GEILS was a devoted bluesman who was neither frontman nor songwriter for the band that bore his name, but who was the musical glue and spiritual engine behind everything the band did. (He was also the least outwardly cool member of his own group.) If you're not from BOSTON or DETROIT and/or you're not of a certain age or a certain profession, you might think of the J. GEILS BAND as an early MTV group who had a few catchy hits, a decent video or two and probably broke up around the time MOLLY RINGWALD was becoming a star. You would be correct in your facts but wrong in your history. In another time and place, they were the American ROLLING STONES, raucous practitioners of a feverish blend of rock and roll, blues and rhythm and blues and deliverers of a ferocious live show who didn't care if they were opening, closing, playing a club in WORCESTER or headlining the GARDEN. They built their way slowly and sweatily toward those pop hits, all of them deserved, but their legacy, at least in my hometown, was something else altogether. CHARLES P. PIERCE and my old editor STEVE MORSE remember a Boston rock legend... RIP also JOSEPH RASCOFF, CHARLIE MURPHY and LINDA HOPKINS. | | - Matty Karas, curator |
