| rantnrave:// Yesterday, my friend MARK SUSTER of UPFRONT VENTURES (an investor in REDEF) held a discussion/lunch with lobbyist HEATHER PODESTA of INVARIANT. I know as much about politics as I do about BARRY'S BOOT CAMP. But I'm super curious. Fascinating conversation about how politicians and regulators work. How to get their attention. How to frame an issue. Crisis management vs. early strategy. Of note was how many different kinds of startups from fitness devices to drones to ride sharing to car rental have all sorts of regulatory issues that young and cash-strapped entrepreneurs may not realize at their inception. And how important it is to think about those hurdles early. And of course, before you invest. The best part? It wasn't partisan. Shocker, I went over my question quota. This usually happens when I'm with Suster. I need a few more lunches... I often get asked what my favorite REDEF ORIGINAL is. So far it has to be "Age of Abundance: How the Content Explosion will Invert the Media Industry." Over the past century, technological advancements have massively reduced the cost and time needed to create and circulate content. Though this has liberated artists, consumers are now drowning in a virtually infinite supply of things to watch, listen to and read. The answer to a world where attention is the key constraint, not capital or distribution, isn’t Big Media – it’s the Influencer Curator. We live to share here at REDEF... From ordering food from their seats to scouting out short bathroom lines via an app, fans have seen tech revolutionize sports stadiums. They crave more than just beer and a good game. Now, fans get an experience that's worthy of leaving home for. SportsSET: "Stadium of the Future"... OK, kids. Weekend viewing assignment on NETFLIX. NOBODY SPEAK: TRIALS OF THE FREE PRESS from FIRST LOOK MEDIA. "HULK HOGAN's court case against GAWKER MEDIA sheds light on wealthy, powerful figures who challenge freedom of the press in order to silence critics." I was outspoken on the verdict and completely wrong about it. I let my issues with some of Gawker's tactics, writers, and editorial over the years cloud my judgment. That's not how it's supposed to work. After spending a few hours with NICK DENTON in December, seeing the film at SUNDANCE and a lunch with FIRST AMENDMENT legal expert FLOYD ABRAMS, I've come to understand how taste can get in the way of a sensible look at free speech. This film is an eye opener on why a free press is so important to us as a nation. If we muzzle critics, those we disagree with or find personally objectionable, where is the line? Great interviews with smarties like WAPO's MARGARET SULLIVAN and more. Very, very timely... Oh, media. | The clocks read zero when the lights went out. It was a Saturday night last December, and Oleksii Yasinsky was sitting on the couch with his wife and teenage son in the living room of their Kiev apartment. The 40-year-old Ukrainian cybersecurity researcher and his family were an hour into Oliver Stone's film Snowden when their building abruptly lost power. | |

A new paper by Meighan Stone, Entrepreneurship Fellow (spring 2017) and former president of the Malala Fund, argues that the predominantly negative coverage of Muslims and refugees on U.S. TV news contributes to negative public opinion of Muslims, and in turn, policies such as President Trump’s “Muslim ban.” | |
