| rantnrave:// KERING has long-term plans for sustainability, discussed at this Oct. 27 talk with DR. HELEN CROWLEY at GCU. With a background in environmental biology, she’s now head of sustainability sourcing innovation at Kering. Takeaways: evolving the supply chain has to be a sustained effort, and it won’t happen overnight. Supply chains are not built for change, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. And then there’s the perennial question: “Sure, but does it scale?” One audience member asked how they’re doing at scale, and Crowley responded that it's an imperative from CEO FRANÇOIS HENRI PINAULT. There will be tradeoffs. They've taken a collaborative approach on working with suppliers as to what standards are met, in what timeframe, and how they can help suppliers achieve it. Change is hard and slow-going, and it’s refreshing to see a company make the investment. It can’t be bad for the bottom line, either. You can’t profit off of the best wool if there isn’t adequate land and food for the sheep. Crowley noted that luxury and sustainability have some overlap: longevity, durability, precious materials, rarity. What’s more luxurious than knowing where things come from these days, and feeling good about it? ANNE ZAZZO from ELLE said that after 30 years in the fashion industry, efforts toward sustainability have “renewed my interest in fashion.” The Kering sustainability report is online… If you’re in NYC, don’t miss the 2nd annual POSITIVE IMPACT AWARDS at the BF+DA on Nov. 4… Finally, a thoughtful article about HALLOWEEN costumes.
