Our thoughts are with the family of Federal Energy Regulatory Commissioner Kevin McIntyre today following news that he died on Jan. 2.

At FERC, McIntyre will be remembered most for protecting the commission’s independence during a time of unprecedented political pressure, leading the regulators to a unanimous rejection of a coal and nuclear bailout package when he was chairman last year.

More broadly, the energy community will miss McIntyre’s genuine congeniality and civility in public service. At a time when energy rhetoric is increasingly combative and disjointed, the former chairman brought a measured, respectful approach to policymaking that helped preserve industry confidence in the commission and delighted those who served with him.

McIntyre’s graciousness often extended to the press. Even as media relationships at other federal agencies deteriorated, the former chairman routinely engaged reporters after public appearances, answering rounds of questions even when staffers would try to usher him out. Throughout his tenure, he never ducked a question from Utility Dive.

McIntyre’s legacy led Utility Dive to name him our Policymaker of the Year for 2018. You can read that piece here.

On a personal note, the Georgetown University community will also mourn the loss of McIntyre, who was a season ticket holder and routine attendee at the school’s basketball games. For one last time, Hoya Saxa, Mr. Chairman.
