Since COVID-19 broke on the world, we’ve been shown many media images of laboratory research scenarios.

We see pictures of scientists in white coats working with test tubes and other investigative equipment racing to understand the virus, and to produce a vaccine.

As someone who supports our work you may understand and identify with these images and research successes.

But you’ll also know that beyond this ‘crisis’ research, other research continues – with no fanfare or media coverage. The kind of ongoing investigation into the many types of cancer that kill nearly 9.5 million people across the globe each year.

Cancer of the colon is on the increase, and typically affects people over the age of 50. So it wasn’t suspected when 34 year old Freda Botha started experiencing abdominal pain that eventually drove her to her doctor. After tests and X-rays, the initial diagnosis was obstruction of the bowel.

But surgery revealed a different story. And Freda woke up to find herself with a stoma bag, and news that a tumour had been removed.

Chemotherapy treatment began, and a while later the stoma reversal was done. But a colonoscopy was required every three months. Over time, more tumours presented, requiring more surgical procedures and treatments.

But today, Freda is clear – she’s on the CANSA Relay For Life Committee, and is a Global Hero of Hope for 2020/2021.

You see, cancer research covers many aspects of investigation: causes, prevention, advances in diagnosis, how to cope with cancer and follow-ups.
