Nearly 50,000 workers at University of California campuses walked off the job last week. 2,000 staffers at 100 Starbucks locations went on strike last Thursday. More than 1,500 part-time faculty members at the New School are on the picket lines.
Employee discontent has come to a boil around the US this year, and it's not limited to "quiet quitting" or the Great Resignation. Workers are demanding more from their employers as corporate profits soar and record high inflation eats away at wage gains from the past few years. It's no secret that Brazil's outgoing president Jair Bolsonaro was no friend of the rainforest. Under his leadership, the Amazon rainforest experienced record levels of mining and deforestation. Brazil's new president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva — known mononymously as Lula — promised to put an end to his predecessor's destruction of the largest rainforest in the world during a speech at the COP27 conference last week.

Earlier this year, the Texas Supreme Court ruled that the state's child welfare agency could investigate families that provide gender-affirming care to minors. A new bill filed last week for the upcoming state legislative session goes a step further by equating gender-affirming care with child abuse.

In a victory for reproductive justice advocates around the state, an Atlanta judge struck down Georgia's six-week abortion ban last week. Judge Robert McBurney ruled that the Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act violated Supreme Court precedent and the US constitution when it was passed three years ago.
Georgia's appellate courts haven't weighed in yet, but it's possible the state may request a stay of the order. |
Candace Cameron Bure (aka DJ Tanner from Full House) decided to kick off her holiday season with a hot mug of homophobia when she announced she's leaving the Hallmark Channel for the Great American Family Channel. (It's OK, we've never heard of it either.) Surely it's just a coincidence that the former will be releasing its first queer Christmas movie this year, right? Right?
