TRUMP NEVER WANTED TO BE PRESIDENT FOR ALL AMERICANS From the moment he took office Trump showed little interest in healing the country. He actively stoked the flames of racial hatred and exploited the nation’s divisions for political gain, encouraging the rise of fringe elements and conspiracy theories that have proliferated through a Republican Party whose soul has changed in his image. BIDEN HAD TO BEAT TRUMP WITH ONE HAND TIED BEHIND HIS BACK President-elect Joe Biden just did something incredibly difficult: He defeated an incumbent president for the first time in 28 years, and only the fifth time in 100. Beyond overcoming the traditional advantages held by an incumbent, Biden had to maneuver through the archaic Electoral College, which denied the clear winner of the popular vote an easy victory. He also had to surmount a stunning series of decisions by conservative courts and Republican legislatures that made it harder both to vote and to count the vote. And finally, there was Donald Trump’s unprecedented and perhaps illegal use of federal government resources to aid his reelection bid. [HuffPost]
BIDEN RAN ON CHARACTER. THAT'S NOT GOING TO BE ENOUGH TO FIX WHAT'S BROKEN WITH AMERICA. Trump’s removal alone will not solve the nation’s troubles. It will not even prevent them from deepening over the next few months. Biden will likely enter office with the economy in deep recession as an uncontrolled pandemic rages. What was once bemoaned as bitter partisanship has metastasized into an at-times murderous cultural animosity. Trump has bequeathed his successor a country in which many Americans on different sides of the political divide not only dislike each other, but take active pleasure in their mutual estrangement. SCARIEST DAYS OF TRUMP PRESIDENCY COULD BE AHEAD He may be a lame duck, but he will have the immense powers of a president and commander in chief — and nothing to lose. [HuffPost]
