Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Fox & Friends

Nature is healing.

As the post-election news landscape simmers down, the ratings landscape is threatening to return to normalcy. That means viewership of fringe networks like Newsmax is coming down to earth, and the ratings strength of Fox News is returning.

Granted, Trump's base is not yet ready to forgive Fox News, as Mediaite's Aidan McLaughlin examined in his dispatch from CPAC. Many diehard Republicans are still furious with the network after its coverage of the 2020 election. And it is still getting beaten by MSNBC and CNN in total day ratings (read all about the February numbers here.)

But Fox's prime time ratings are strong. (We should note, most CPAC attendees told Mediaite that while they might begrudge Fox, they still watch Tucker.)

But the real victory today goes to Fox & Friends, which broke Morning Joe's 40-day winning streak on Monday, and continued to land in first place in the ratings in both the demo and total viewers on Tuesday.

MEDIA LOSER:
Dinesh D'Souza

Dinesh D'Souza, right-wing provocateur, has fallen quite far from his previous perch as a respected conservative author and commentator.

He now almost exclusively makes headlines for either shockingly dumb comments, or shockingly nasty ones — like when he mocked the survivors of a school shooting or posted a meme depicting Michelle Obama as a man.

And every time he makes one of those comments, people ask why he is still listed as a contributor for the National Review, a magazine he has not written for since 2009.

Well ask no more, because Dinesh D’Souza has been officially scrubbed from the conservative mag’s website.

Some Mediaite sleuthing found that D'Souza was scrubbed in August of last year, right around the time he launched a bizarre quest to convince Twitter that Thailand was actually pronounced "Thigh-land."

That fight was waged in order to defend Donald Trump against the embarrassment of having mispronounced the country's name. An incredibly pathetic fight it was.

The A-Block

Neanderthal Mania

Leading the cable news networks today is a story we are begrudgingly labeling Neanderthal-gate (pause for groans).

Essentially, Texas and Mississippi decided to lift their mask mandates and other restrictions, before most of America has been vaccinated and the pandemic rages on.

President Joe Biden was asked about the decision on Wednesday, and he said he thought it was a mistake.

“The last thing we need is Neanderthal thinking that in the meantime, everything’s fine, take off your mask, forget it. It still matters,” Biden said.

That remark has apparently sparked fury on Fox News, where Texas Governor Greg Abbott appeared Thursday morning to respond.

One Fox anchor even compared the remark to Hillary Clinton's famous "deplorables" comment. Josh Hawley weighed in.

And in a second appearance on CNBC, Abbott downplayed the impact of his lifting of the executive order, saying Texans are all encouraged to still wear masks.

Responding to Biden, he said "Neanderthal" is “not the type of word a president should be using.”

Not only that, but we've apparently all been pronouncing "Neanderthal" wrong.

Keeping the Myth Alive

CNN’s Don Lemon has run out of patience for former Vice President Mike Pence’s unwavering loyalty for a man that almost got him killed.

In a long, heated Wednesday night monologue, the CNN Tonight host alternately condemned and mocked the former VP for an op-ed pushing two key myths of Donald Trump’s “big lie” about widespread election fraud.
