After weeks of vaccinating health care workers and nursing home residents and staff, the state of Minnesota has just opened up vaccinations to anyone 65 and older to get the COVID-19 vaccine. But the rollout, billed as a pilot, was almost too popular. As of Tuesday afternoon, the state fielded 232,000 phone calls seeking appointments and the website for appointments, at its peak, had 10,000 unique hits per second. Meanwhile, COVID-19 numbers this months continue to show uplifting signs. Minnesota's latest COVID-19 data show 922 new cases along with six more deaths; 584 people were in the hospital with COVID-19, with 110 in ICUs. Two months ago, the number of active COVID-19 cases in the state hovered around 50,000. Now, that count is 11,227 — lowest level since October.
Here are Minnesota’s current COVID-19 statistics: 5,939 deaths (12 more)447,349 positive cases (980 new), 429,325 off isolation (96 percent)6.2 million tests, 3.2 million people tested 4.6 percent seven-day positive test rate After failed attempts to halt the governor's emergency power, Minnesota Senate Republicans are now trying to enact new laws to chip away at Gov. Tim Walz’s authority. Republicans in the Minnesota Senate continue to oppose the emergency powers Walz has been using to respond to the pandemic, and now they’ve now turned their attention to legislative remedies. There's a hearing later today on a bill to limit the penalties imposed for violating emergency orders. And several other bills introduced at the Capitol would also chip away at the COVID-19 orders Walz has issued.
