It was a beautiful weekend. Here in the New York area there was not a cloud in the sky, and the unseasonably warm temps felt like summer. And of course, the election was finally called. In my house there were tears, there were hearty laughs and there were definitely our fair share of toasts. It just felt good to feel a glimmer of hope in this otherwise tragic year.
I know I’m not alone — have you seen Van Jones’ amazing speech on CNN? — when I say that at least for people on this side of the aisle, it felt good to be a parent again. It felt like all the things you program into your kids — to be kind, to play fair, to treat others with respect, to be decent, that character counts — was finally recognized in and by our president. There’s an example to be seen.
I let my older son stay up to watch President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris speak. Like so many other parents, I cheered and cried when I heard Harris, who broke records that have existed for too long, say:
“And to the children of our country, regardless of your gender, our country has sent you a clear message: Dream with ambition; Lead with conviction; and see yourselves in a way others may not simply because they’ve never seen it before. But know that we will applaud you every step of the way.”
It was a remarkable thing to witness. The work is far from over, but I hope you all had a few days to bask in the sunshine, in the warmth of things maybe turning around, like I did. We deserved it.
Onward, as they say, and be well, everyone. |
