The major league baseball draft finally arrives Sunday, bringing with it an end to a month's-long debate: Who will be drafted No. 1 ... LSU center fielder Dylan Crews or pitcher Paul Skenes? A lot of factors are involved, but for what it's worth we've got odds on who is most likely to be the Pittsburgh Pirates' No. 1 overall pick this weekend. That said, an ESPN writer projected Florida outfielder Wyatt Langford as the top overall prospect, so take all that into consideration, too. Fresh from my trip to Italy and finally getting over the cold I packed away as a souvenir, I'm back with my first post-College World Series column, taking a look at some of the big events in our sports world while I was away. The LSU sports world isn't totally in sleep mode these days. Twenty-one current and former Tiger track and field athletes are expected to compete at the U.S. outdoor championships this weekend, with an eye to qualifying for this year's world championships. And see how LSU women's basketball All-American Angel Reese is doing with Team USA in the FIBA AmeriCup competition in Mexico. Finally, the U.S. Women's Open tees off Thursday morning for the first time ever at the iconic Pebble Beach Golf Links (iconic is an overused word in sports, but in this case it is properly used). Two golfers with LSU ties are in the field: current Tiger Aine Donegan and former LSU standout Madelene Sagstrom. That's all for now, folks. Now get back to work (if I have to, you have to). We can't make that Fourth of July weekend drag out any longer than it already has, can we? That said, if you've figured out how to stretch it out a little further, drop me a line. Scott Rabalais |
