| Is Reddit trying to have its cake and eat it with Google and generative AI? In its first earnings call as a publicly-traded company, Reddit detailed its growth from organic search traffic. But can Reddit manage to have its cake – trade on its reputation for unvarnished authenticity – and eat it – license its content to train the very AI models it wants to stand apart from? |
What we're reading this Friday Lost in the AI jargon at Google I/O Was Google’s I/O event this week too confusing? Andrew Lanxon writes for CNET that the big event was “clear as mud”. Google “needs to get everyday users, like me and you, excited about its products potential and help us understand precisely how they'll fit into our lives,” he added. “Almost all of today's announcements are in some way relevant to one part of my life or another, and yet I'm struggling to even grasp what they are, let alone what they do.” Taking it back to 1999 – text-based search and the Nokia 3210 Google is rolling out a search filter to allow users to show only text-based links in the SERPs. Danny Sullivan, the Google Search Liaison explained in a post on X, “We’ve added this after hearing from some that there are times when they’d prefer to just see links to web pages in their search results, such as if they’re looking for longer-form text documents, using a device with limited internet access, or those who just prefer text-based results shown separately from search features. If you’re in that group, enjoy!” Our deputy editor Rebecca Sentence wrote some advice for creating meta-descriptions back in 2020, should you need to brush up. 'Dumbphone' boom The makers of Nokia phones have unveiled the new Nokia 3210. HMD, which stands for Human Mobile Devices, have announced that, “Amidst a ‘dumbphone’ boom, the icon is back for its 25th Anniversary year”. In a press release, the company said, “The devices offer a solution for a digital detox in a world where almost four in ten (38%) of 16-24 years olds worry they spend too much time on their smartphone.” Like the old handset, you get Snake and a long-lasting battery. But also a two mega-pixel camera, for retro photos, and “Cloud Apps which will bring smart features to an accessibly priced feature phone including news, weather, videos, games and more, all in one place.” AI is like the internet in the 90s Coca-Cola’s European CMO Javier Meza was speaking at Advertising Week Europe about AI in marketing. “This is for me like the 90s when the internet was just arriving. What is this internet? What is it going to be? How are we going to use that? Then today, internet is like oxygen,” he said. “If I could give you one recommendation it is to go back to school and study digital, analytics and artificial intelligence.” Read more in Marketing Week.
