| A difficult era for American Jews, including in Utah |
|
| | A recent survey found that a majority of American Jews have changed their behavior due to a rise in antisemitism since Oct. 7, 2023. It marks the first time in the history of the report that a majority of Jews expressed those fears. What about Utah's Jewish population? Rabbi Samuel Spector of Congregation Kol Ami in Salt Lake City, painted a concerning picture of the situation facing his community, Sydney Jezik reported. “Since Oct. 7 ... we have received multiple bomb threats,” he said. “We have been harassed and received threatening emails, phone calls, social media comments. People have also driven past our synagogue and harassed our congregation.” Here are three key points: Jewish communities are amping up security, with some individuals considering potential exit strategies. There are around 6,000 Jews who live in Utah. Utah is one of the nation's most religious states, and is seen as a place that is fiercely protective of religious freedom. Traditionally because of those beliefs, Utah has been viewed as a welcoming place for Jews, according to prior reports. Why are home prices lower? Home prices are down from last year, thanks to houses staying on the market longer, making it a good time for would-be homeowners to take the plunge, Lisa Riley Roche reports. Mortgage rates are relatively flat, and according to Holmgren, it's unlikely the Federal Reserve will make any significant changes soon. “If rates improve significantly then the market becomes more competitive and we will see home prices increase. Home prices are down year over year so it’s a good time to buy,” Holmgren said. “Date the interest rate and marry the home, you can always refinance.” Show the numbers In Salt Lake County, current typical listing price is at about $575,000 compared to $615,000 a year ago. Homes are also staying on the market longer — 59 days in Salt Lake County, which is an 8% increase over last year. 🏠 Read more about mortgage rates. | Utah Snow squalls, lake-effect snow could cause Utah travel issues (KSL.com)
