The more that giants Mercedes and Red Bull get dragged into a resource-heavy technical development war means that every moment spent on their 2021 cars is one that isn’t being used on the upcoming 2022 designs. I’m sure Ferrari, McLaren et al are rubbing their hands together, hoping the 2021 title fight intensifies even more!
The ‘wacky’ setup that Mercedes tried in last weekend’s Styrian Grand Prix is perhaps the best indicator yet that it’s trying to find engineering solutions to find speed, rather than designing its next performance-improving part. Have the update taps really been turned off at Mercedes, or as technical director James Allison seems to suggest, is there more performance coming in the pipeline? |
