Hi there, As an adult, the thing that really slaps a smile on my face is seeing the young children in my family grow. Seeing their interests and personalities take hold is so rewarding! And one thing that always crosses my mind is - I wonder what they will be when they grow up?
If you ask them, they could be either really excited to tell you they want to be a dinosaur or tell you they are tired of getting this question, depending on their age.
Here’s what’s cool about science:
Science can prepare you for everyday life. Whether cooking, cleaning, driving, or swimming - it’s all around us! You don’t have to dream of a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) to have an appreciation of and utilize the innumerable skills learned through hands-on science.
But - there are a number of reasons to consider a potential future in STEM.
“The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts overall employment in the economy to grow by 7.4% between 2016-2026, while jobs in STEM fields are expected to grow by 10.8%.” College-educated STEM job holders earn, on average, 34% more per hour than non-STEM employees. (Source)
Science stems (see what I did there?) from wonder! And wonder is most prominent during childhood. If your child has an interest in STEM, I’d say it’s worth fostering that appreciation.
Watching their future unfold is so rewarding. We can’t wait to see what they do next.
